Wes Craven served as executive producer on this direct-to-video chiller about a group of friends who discover that the remote island they’ve chosen as a vacation spot is home to a wild pack of attack dogs. After dispatching a sailboater and his bikini-clad girlfriend, the canines (which look more cuddly than ferocious) pick off the interloping friends with all-too-human cunning; the survivors have just enough time to discover that the mutts are the product of military genetic experiments to create unstoppable attack dogs. Director Nick Mastrandrea (a longtime production associate of both Craven and George Romero) lends a professional look to his debut feature, and gets decent performances from his cast (which includes Lost’s Michelle Rodriguz, Taryn Manning, and Oliver Hudson), but the script is tired almost from page one, and the resulting action and gore do little to help this indie picture stand out from the rest of the horror crowd. Dog lovers with soft hearts should be forewarned that the CGI stand-ins for the animal actors endure some grusome abuse in the course of the picture. –Paul Gaita

Big Eden has won the audience awards at just about every gay and lesbian film festival there is. Henry (Arye Gross) is an artist living in New York but still carrying a torch for the guy he had a crush on in high school. When his grandfather has a stroke, Henry returns to his Montana hometown, Big Eden, where he rediscovers friends he hasn’t seen in years. His high school crush has since married, had children, and divorced–and seems ready to take some very different steps with his life. Big Eden is one of those implausibly tolerant towns where lesbians kiss each other in public and old coots in cowboy hats try to play matchmaker with bashful qUrs. In time, Nicholson would hold the honor as the most Academy Award nominated actor in film history. B-movie producer and director Roger Corman gave Nicholson his first major acting opportunities, releasing such beat generation flicks as The Wild Ride (through his Filmgroup company) and cult classics The Terror, Little Shop Of Horrors and The Raven. Co-stars Robert Bean (Creature From The Haunted Sea) and Georgianna Carter (Night Of The Blood Beast) were also regulars from Corman’s repertoire company.
